Remembrance
How could I forget you, that time we first danced,
the merry gleam that shone so brighly in your eyes,
like moonlight creeping across the water,
the smile that played across your lips,
like a child's in its innocence,
Yet as seductive as the candle held forth in the night,
and I, so much like the moth, was drawn to you,
to your light and to your warmth.
Holding you closer as the music slowed,
the smell of your hair like the meadows of my childhood,
fresh, new, vibrant with the life with which it swayed,
in beat to a song that neither of us liked,
until we truly heard it for the first time together,
letting the singer speak in lieu of our fragile words,
as we moved to the lazy beat of the drum,
that pounded in synch to our hearts as they, too, danced.
And I felt like my smile would never die upon my lips,
as my fingers traced the life-line of your palm,
How silly I must have looked with that dopey smile,
As the world receded to just the two of us,
leaning into each other and moving to the whim of the song,
letting it work its magick upon us and the night,
our lips met as if by some cue, a gentle kiss,
yet filled with longings and silent sighs,
A memory, a dream,
all I have left of you.

Sonata of Love Betrayed in D minor
You tapped out time to my heartbeat
Your baton held for all to see
Swung fiercely in the overture
As you wrought your music upon me
You played my heart like a violin
My family like a string quartet
My friends fell in like an orchestra
To each little chord and sonnet
Oh, what a fine conductor you are
Your notes are belief and affection
Your sheet music is manipulation
Played out on my heart to perfection
And I danced to the tune like a puppet
Jerking like a marionette
On the strings you plucked so expertly
In some ghastly, soul-less minuet
Now the symphony has ended, my dear
Take your bows without missing a beat
Bask in my applause, you deserve it
For betrayal of love so complete.

It Kills Me
Another man shall breathe your breath, your sighs
as his lips brush against yours
and taste the sweetness of your kiss
time and again and yet wondering anew each time
Another man shall know the warmth of your touch
your breathless murmurs as waves of pleasure break over you
your dreams will be his to share, to make come true
to smile about in the afternoons of spring.
Another man shall feel your tears on his shoulder
and give comfort to your sobbing cries
and when you say nothing's wrong
he'll know exactly what nothing is.
Another man will argue with you fiercely
about something neither of you will remember the next day
and yet apologize before the night closes in
never wanting to go to bed mad at you.
Another man will find fulfillment in your eyes
completion in the ring you slip upon his finger
contentment to hold you tight upon waking in the morn
and immortality in the undying love he bears you.
Another man will chide you when you worry
about a grey hair that crops up
knowing you are as beautiful as the day you met
and will greet each new grey with a loving smile and kiss.
Another man will grow old with you
loving you with a maturity hard-won
will love your every quirk like a beloved child
and will have deep smile-lines that are all your fault.
Another man will cry when you are stolen from him
Far too soon by fate
And he will soon lie beside you
His heart never failing until it is broken by destiny.
And I wish I were him
in everything, the good and the bad
But I will never be
and it kills me.
